• Interareolar space reduction, enlarged areoles, and abundant long bristles and trichomes indicate that the flowering zone of Cephalocereus senilis is a lateral cephalium.
• Morphological changes in the flowering zone are coupled with anatomical changes after the zone is differentiated.
• Periderm development near the apical meristem, absence of chlorenchyma, and delayed xylematic fiber differentiation are associated with the lateral cephalium.
• The lateral cephalium resembles previously reported Espostoa lateral cephalia, except for crystals in trichomes, extra ribs, and expanded xylem and phloem parenchyma.
