ABSTRACT

Highlights • Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) imbalance (low valine and high isoleucine/leucine) inhibits hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) proliferation and survival.• Low BCAA culture does not block HSC growth but poorly supports HSC maintenance.• Dietary BCAA depletion conditions the mouse bone marrow (BM) for HSC transplantation.• BCAA conditioning improves survival and red blood cell (RBC) counts compared with valine conditioning.
