Varietal and seasonal differences in the effects of commercial bumblebees on fruit quality in strawberry crops

Highlights • We tested the effect of commercial bumblebees on strawberry pollination and quality.• Commercial bees increased high grade fruit by 25% in an early-flowering variety.• In two other varieties commercial bees had no effect on fruit quality.• Commercial bumblebees do not always provide the benefit they are assumed to.• Commercial bumblebees can be very effective when used in the right circumstance.
