This letter is written to correct an oversight in a recentpaper thatwecoauthored(Hermanetal. 2002). The soil-degradation model described in the paper was not as novel as indicated. This model, and a putativemechanistic explanation for its Þt,wasdescribed previously in Gustafson and Holden 1990. While the models were derived and expressed in different ways, they are in fact the same model. We thank Dr. Gustafson for tactfully bringing this to our attention, andapologize forouroversightof this earlierwork.Dr. Gustafson and Dr. Holden (D.G, and L.H., personal communications) also indicated that they have discovered even earlier publications describing this approach applied to digestion and compartment models (Turner et al 1961, Turner 1963,Matis &Wehrly 1979, and Matis et al 1989).
