ABSTRACT

Abstract Most wounds heal in a few days to a few weeks. However, even with the vast advances in today's healthcare technology, some wounds do not heal as expected and become chronic. Both acute and chronic wounds can have a significant impact on patients' quality of life and high demand on healthcare services. Reducing this burden and improving the outcome for patients is the aim of wound treatment. There are many different treatment options currently available, which can be broadly classified into dressings, drugs, devices, surgery, and biologic therapies, and patients may require a combination of these to achieve healing. This chapter describes the causes of wounds, the factors that can affect healing, and the principles of wound management.
