A plant's reproductive success depends on making flowers but also upon developing appropriate shoot internodes to optimally arrange and support the flowering shoot. Compared to floral morphogenesis, we understand little about the networks directing changes to internode growth during flowering. However, exciting new studies show that both long range signals and local factors may harmonise internode morphogenesis with shoot development. Some of the same players modulate symplastic transport to seasonally regulate internode growth in perennial species, while other networks overlay age-dependent microRNA-antagonism. Exploring possible hierarchical control amongst symplastic continuity, age, systemic signals and local regulators during internode morphogenesis will be key to elucidate the mechanisms coordinating axial growth with development of the wider plant body.
