ABSTRACT

Abstract This chapter begins with features characterizing the postembryonic digestive system as a whole (especially cellular- and organ-level morphology) in regular sea urchins. Then, a more detailed review is presented of each of the main subregions: namely, the buccal cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach (with siphonal groove or siphon), intestine, and rectum. In addition, the bacterial, protozoan, and metazoan symbionts living in regular sea urchin digestive systems are covered. At present, an active research area is the application of metagenomic methods to demonstrate how the enteric bacteria respond to changes in diet and other environmental variables. The chapter concludes with a description of the development of the embryonic, larval, and metamorphic digestive system of regular sea urchins.
