POLITICAL INSIGHT • MARCH 2020 I n the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election, Donald Trump’s team hired a little-known AngloAmerican company called Cambridge Analytica (CA) to work on the Republican candidate’s social media campaign. CA used data analysis techniques to target tens of millions of voters across the US with proTrump messages. The company’s activities were made possible by the harvesting of data from over 50 million Facebook users, without their consent or knowledge.
