ABSTRACT

A methodology has been designed to identify and quantify the extent of peatlands in the headwaters of the Chillon river basin, located at 3800 masl, where a pilotarea was defined. Information from Landsat TM, ETM + and OLI sensors from 1986 to 2015 was processed using one image per year. The images corresponded as closeas possible to the same date in the same season. Spatial distribution maps were produced using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI) and normalized difference infrared index (NDII). These indexes were displayed in the Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) bands as follows: R (NDII), G (NDVI), B (NDWI). Zonification of the peatlands was performed by means of a classification of parallelepipeds on the RGB display. A slope map was used to generate the map of spatial distribution of the peatlands, and the peatlands vector was also obtained.
