ABSTRACT

Obesity can cause metabolic disorders characterized by the incidence of inflammation due to an increase in high-fat diet. Rosa damascena is one of the promising ingredients to be used as an anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, in this study the effect of the ethanolic extract of Rosa damascena (EERD) on the biomarker of systemic tissue inflammation (interleukin-6) was evaluated. In the experiment, rats as subjects were divided into 4 groups, namely negative control, positive control (Obesity), Experiment I (Obesity + EERD 500 mg/kgBW), Experiment II (Obesity + EERD 1000 mg/kgBW). The high-fat diet was given for 8 weeks, while the EERD was given orally for 10 days. After 10 days of EERD treatment, the rats were anesthetized with ketamine for about 75 mg/kgBW i.p. A number of rat blood samples were taken from the heart to determine interleukin-6 levels through the ELISA method (the secondary metabolites were positive based on the results of phytochemical screening). The results showed that the extract at a dose of 500 mg/kgBW and 1000 mg/kgBW caused a significant decrease in interleukin-6 levels (p < 0.05) compared to the positive control. This study demonstrates the potential ability of EERD to alter interleukin-6 levels, which may be correlated with obesity.
