Turbulence Theory: Imperfect, but Necessary

G. Vallis

Published 2021 in AGU Advances

ABSTRACT

A joke briefly circulating was that one of these orders was a ban on using the phrase “turbulence is the most important unsolved problem in classical physics” (Another banned phrase was “further research is needed on this topic”). The phrase is indeed a cliché but it does illustrate a simple truth: turbulence is important, and it is an unsolved problem, and, of relevance to this paper, it is at the core of a number of problems in climate and planetary science.
