Efficient Music Memorization: Start with the Whole

ABSTRACT

The most opportune time to start memorizing music is when initially learning a piece (Mishra 2010). Many studies suggest that memorization should begin even before undertaking technical aspects of the music, and that it is crucial in shifting the focus from the page “to the real business in [sic] hand: expressing the music to the listener” (Snell 2005). Playing without sheet music may create a deeper understanding of the work simply through the practice required. Memorization may also expand on the ability to create a more nuanced and expressive sound, allowing increased focus on the performance and less on reading (Reichenbach 2017).
