Close to half of adults in the United States have hypertension (HTN), a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Current guidelines recommend lifestyle change as a primary target in addressing HTN, including initiation of healthy diet and exercise. This review examines the evidence for nutrition and specific dietary factors (such as garlic), exercise, botanical medicines, and nutrients in the management of HTN. Lifestyle interventions and other integrative supports may have a strong impact on blood pressure control.
