This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between social support and physical function (ADL and IADL) among urban elderly. The study subjects were 368 older adults residing in a city. Data collection was performed in May 2022 by interview. Social support was not significantly dependent on ADL level, but a lower level of social support was significantly associated with lower IADL levels. ADL levels were not significantly related to social support, but IADL levels showed a significant relationship with social support. Logistic regression showed that the risk ratio for disability was not significantly influenced by ADL level, but that the need for social support was significantly higher in the lower IADL group (Q1) than in the very high IADL group (Q4). These findings suggest that a lower IADL level is significantly associated with a lower level of social support.
