ABSTRACT Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can ameliorate soil fertility and boost crop yields. This paper reports a study of the effect of PGPR inoculation on Medicago sativa plants. Sixteen indigenous PGPR were isolated and screened for PGP traits. Their influence was assessed on the growth of M. sativa plants, root colonisation by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and soil enzyme activities (SEA). The bacterial isolates showed interesting PGP traits. They increased the plant’s shoot and root dry weights, AM colonisation, and SEA. Two bacteria assigned to Pseudomonas koreensis and Alcaligenes faecalis were selected as effective inoculants for M. sativa plants. These PGPR may represent suitable candidates as bio-enhancers and biofertilizers in sustainable agricultural systems.
