Due to expeditious advancements in imaging technology, image fusion is perceived as an important assistant in a variety of fields like biomedical engineering, remote sensing etc. The pervasiveness of image fusion algorithms led to the rising demand for the measurement of visual image quality with the purpose to correlate the outcomes of various fusion methods which would benefit medical fraternity to determine diseases skillfully. Assessment of the visual image quality for the fused image generally depends upon application to application. Researchers are gaining interest to develop computer software that automatically evaluates the quality of final fused image with no human intervention. This paper studies several image quality assessment metrics used for the interpretation of the fused image in the province of pixel level multimodal medical image fusion and thereby comparing different image fusion algorithms according to the selected metrics.
