ABSTRACT

This study identifies the efforts of multiple actors in the formation of an agroecologist network and the market adoption as a political arena for agroecologist network actors to pursue emancipatory positions. Agrifood markets are dominated by few corporations with global operations, and to obtain emancipation to face this hegemonic agrifood system requires shaping more democratic and sovereign models, such as the agroecological model. In this way, we employ ethnographic methods to explore a network of agroecologists, including farmers, consumers, and supporters, in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. Results demonstrate the formation of a particular logic of food production and commercialization within the network that: (1) prioritizes an approximation of producers to consumers by shaping short distribution channels, (2) values civic and democratic aspects of governance, and (3) seeks to promote a critique of hegemonic agrifood models in favor of reconfiguring food provisioning models. The results allow us to recognize, even in a limited way and subject to cooptation, the market as a useful arena in the construction of agrifood emancipatory projects.
