Dengue has long been classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), largely due to the scientific marginalization that has underestimated its global impact. This study examines the association between dengue and poverty, addressing a critical gap in literature. A systematic review of 250 articles was conducted, with 15 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The findings reveal that 80% of the reviewed studies report inconclusive results, while 20% identify a positive association between dengue and poverty. Notably, no research within this review establishes a negative correlation. The study highlights significant challenges in understanding this relationship, including the heterogeneity of poverty indicators, the ambiguous nature of existing data, and the continued marginalization of dengue research. These factors contribute to a considerable knowledge gap, limiting the ability of the scientific community to fully grasp the disease’s impact on global health. The de-prioritization of dengue research, coupled with increased globalization and political influences, exacerbates the public health threat posed by the disease. Given the growing risk to global health, this research underscores the urgent need to dismantle long-standing misconceptions about dengue. Key recommendations include prioritizing further studies to clarify the nature of the disease, developing a robust surveillance system to track its trajectory, and enhancing predictive models for prevention and treatment. Additionally, increased healthcare resources and community mobilization through education are essential for mitigating the disease’s impact. These findings emphasize the necessity of repositioning dengue as a critical public health concern.
