Psychological distress, tobacco smoking and alcohol use: A population survey in Great Britain

Highlights • Smoking in the past or now increases odds of using alcohol at higher risk levels.• Distress increases odds of using alcohol at higher risk, notably among smokers.• Smokers with lower/moderate distress less often attempt to restrict alcohol use.• Stronger distress is positively associated with attempts to restrict alcohol use.• Stronger distress is positively associated with motivation to restrict alcohol use.
