ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Land grabbing and dispossession due to conservation processes have increasingly pressured traditional communities to adjust their productive systems or abandon their lands, threatening their forms of social reproduction. Agroforestry systems are a promising way to transform the productive aspects and socioeconomic reality of traditional communities located in high biodiversity hotspots. The results are from a case study in the Areia Branca Quilombola Remnant Community (QRC), located in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The research used semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The results of the research indicate that the agroecological transition to agroforestry systems provided (1) the establishment of a new production system anchored in the appreciation of the traditional knowledge of the community, (2) the production of diverse, healthy foods related to the local context, ensuring greater food autonomy, (3) greater autonomy in agricultural production and marketing, and (4) greater economic stability. In conclusion, the agroecological transition through agroforestry systems at the Areia Branca QRC highlighted traditional knowledge and increased peasants’ productivity and food autonomy.
