ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study, focusing on Vietnam’s banking sector, investigates the relationship between E-leadership (EL), new ways of working (NWOW) and adaptive performance (AP) in the post-COVID-19 era. It examines the mediating roles of organizational commitment (OC) and sense of purpose (SoP) in influencing AP, providing insights into adaptability within remote work contexts.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative methodology was employed, collecting data from 288 teleworkers in Vietnam’s commercial banking sector. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the research model and analyze the direct and mediating effects of organizational commitment and SoP on adaptive performance.FindingsThe results demonstrate that EL and NWOW significantly positively affect AP, with OC as a critical mediator. However, no significant relationship was found between SoP and AP in NWOW settings. This suggests that other intrinsic motivators may play a more substantial role in enhancing adaptability.Practical implicationsPractical recommendations for managers include flexible work policies, clear communication and targeted resources to boost engagement and performance.Originality/valueThe study underscores the importance of EL and OC in fostering a supportive remote work culture to improve AP. Addressing region-specific cultural and economic dynamics, this research offers insights into enhancing teleworker adaptability in emerging markets, contributing to remote work and leadership literature in developing countries.
