ABSTRACT

This study developed a novel method for the inversion on the extinction coefficient of oil film in visible wavelengths based on fluorescence spectroscopy. A new analytical model that takes the observation angles into account is established to solve for the extinction coefficients in the visible wavelengths. Based on this model, a measurement strategy of differential thickness and observation angles is designed to obtain the arithmetic solution of the extinction coefficient within the fluorescence spectral range. The fluorescence spectra collected in the experiment generally conform with the analytical model, and the proposed method achieves accurate inversion on the extinction coefficient of diesel and crude oil samples at root-mean-square errors of 0.0026 and 0.0040, respectively. The proposed method is expected to provide the theoretical basis of the development of a new instrument for extinction coefficient measurement.
