ABSTRACT

ICESat-2 carries the Advanced Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), whose primary mission is to measure changes in the height of global ice caps, clouds, and land. Using ICESat-2 data, researchers have made a series of important scientific discoveries on a global scale, such as changes in the rate of sea level rise, the impact of ocean circulation systems, and the rate of melting of polar ice caps. These findings are important for understanding the impacts of global warming on marine ecosystems and human societies. In this paper, we will discuss in detail the current research status and application of ICESat-2 in the fields of ocean bathymetry, inland water bathymetry, as well as glacier and snow bathymetry, which will provide a systematic and powerful technical support for a deeper understanding of the distribution and dynamics of the Earth's surface water bodies, responding to climate change, protecting water resources, and guiding the early warning and management of disasters.
