ABSTRACT

The semantic foundations and logical consistency of interval type-2 fuzzy sets in mathematical modeling applications are examined in this study. Criticisms have questioned the logical validity of these mathematical structures, stemming from claims that certain propositions formulated using interval type-2 fuzzy sets are logically incompatible suggesting that only general type-2 fuzzy sets can adequately address inherent problems. We believe that this claim reduces the potential of using the semantics of interval type-2 fuzzy sets. For this reason, we carefully constructed examples and showed the logical coherence of interval type-2 fuzzy sets and their validity as modeling tools. We hope this note clarifies those misconceptions for researchers employing interval type-2 fuzzy sets in their mathematical modeling endeavors.
