ABSTRACT

The traditional craftsmanship of the Duan Ink-Stone is an intangible cultural heritage (ICH). However, with the promotion of social progress and the transformation of the concept of living, the transmission of this heritage has become a significant challenge. Consequently, a decline in public involvement diminishes the potential for educational opportunities. In light of these considerations, this paper proposes the development of a mobile application based on the concept of Situated Learning Theory, entitled “River for Duan Ink-Stone”. The game incorporates narrative, immersive and interactive elements, thereby engaging users in the production of Duan Ink-Stones while simultaneously ensuring the effectiveness of the learning process. A mixed-methodological framework was developed, comprising quantitative controlled studies. In the experimental condition, participants were exposed to the game, and their cognitive level in Duan Ink-Stone craftsmanship was compared to that of a control group that underwent a standard game. Furthermore, qualitative data was gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, which were conducted to assess the experiences and attitudes of the respondents towards the game. The results demonstrated that the “River for Duan Ink-Stone” mobile application significantly enhanced public awareness of the production process of Duan Ink-Stones and had a positive impact on the cultural consciousness and motivation to learn among the younger generation. This paper presents a theoretical and practical demonstration of the utilization of mobile gaming technology for the conservation of intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, a prospective strategy is proposed for the protection and advancement of the craftsmanship associated with the production of Duan Ink-Stones.
