ABSTRACT

More-than-human design acknowledges the entanglements between human and nonhuman entities, prompting designers to explore how existing human-centered technologies can be reimagined to foster interdependent relationships between humans and non-humans. In this paper, we present an ongoing project speculating a more-than-human social media platform, which seeks to integrate spiders inhabit domestic environments into everyday social media networks. We aim to cultivate a sense of interconnection and prompt humans to acknowledge the presence and well-being of spiders, thus addressing the entanglements of humans and non-humans in shared spaces. In our design process, there has been a significant transformation. Our experience reveals the agency of more-than-human entities, which urges designers, as speaking subjects, to shift their design decisions. This design proposal emerged from insights gathered through a prior design prototype. We also discuss how we respond to and reflect on these complexities and conflicts when integrating human-centered technologies into more-than-human world.
