Hydrogeological characterization of the São Francisco River basin’s tributaries in a semi-arid region, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

In the northern region of Minas Gerais state, Brazil, the São Francisco River basin covers an area of 31,116 km², encompassing 22 municipalities and important environmental protection areas. This region is characterized by considerable water-related issues, as it encompasses a significative number of inhabitants which are constantly suffering from water drought. Thus, this research's main objective is the hydrogeological characterization of a stretch of the São Francisco River and its tributaries, in a semi-arid region on the border of the state of Minas Gerais with the state of Bahia, Brazil. The hydrogeological units, hydrodynamic parameters, morphostructural lineaments and their relationship with the productivity of tubular wells, climatological balance, and estimations of impact on the region’s water, are characterized and discussed. The hydrogeological analysis enabled the evaluation of the connection between surface water and its intersections with groundwater. The Fissure-Karstic aquifer showed high productivity and anisotropy. Hydrodynamic parameters revealed homogeneity in the Porous aquifer, while the direction of groundwater flow, evaluated by a potentiometric surface map, showed a regional hydraulic load towards the Fissure-Karstic aquifer due to its alternating layers of thick metapelitic rocks that form an Aquitard. Recharge areas are related to the covers flat tops and over Porous aquifers. The NW-SE lineament direction demonstrated the highest specific capacity values related to tubular wells and is the main direction of fractures and ducts of the karst aquifer.  The study of this area made it possible to assess a complex aquifer system, integrating several aquifers and non-aquifers. It was also possible to determine the importance and interaction of each kind of water reservoir.
