Highlights • MTA1 is significantly upregulated in gastric cancer tissues and AGS cells.• MTA1 enhances chemoresistance to doxorubicin and cisplatin by increasing IC50 values.• MTA1 promotes cancer cell stemness by upregulating SOX-2 and OCT-4 expression.• MTA1 suppresses apoptosis by modulating Bax and Bcl-2 expression.• Targeting MTA1 may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for overcoming chemoresistance in gastric cancer.
