ABSTRACT

Heterosis refers to the increased vigour, yield and overall performance of F1 hybrids compared to their parental lines. Heterotic grouping is an essential strategy in hybrid breeding that aims to classify germplasm lines into distinct groups to maximize heterosis and hybrid performance. Various methods of heterotic grouping include pedigree analysis, combining ability analysis, phenotypic clustering and marker-assisted heterotic grouping. Pedigree analysis classifies lines based on their genetic background and ancestral information. Combining ability analysis is a widely used approach that classifies lines based on their performance in hybrid combinations. Phenotypic clustering utilizes multivariate analysis to classify germplasm based on agronomic and morphological characters. Marker-assisted heterotic grouping involves various molecular markers like RFLP, AFLP, RAPD, SSR and SNP. Advances in genetic mapping techniques and incorporating genomic selection may improve the understanding and precision of heterotic grouping. Heterotic grouping is a powerful strategy in hybrid breeding that enables breeders to efficiently create superior hybrids by exploiting genetic diversity and heterosis.
