ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to improve the operation of the real time Automatic Generation Control (AGC) system. AGC is a software application that automatically maintains the frequency of the power system within the nominal value of 50 Hz. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources create large and rapid oscillations in the power grid, necessitating an appropriate and responsive adjustment by the automatic control system. For this activity, an optimized structure model of the new AGC implemented in Romania was created in Simulink. The model considers the national electrical power production and consumption, frequency deviations and corrections received by the International Grid Control Cooperation (IGCC) system regulator. An empirical method and a calculation based on artificial neural networks were used to choose the optimal parameters of the proportional-integral (PI) controller of AGC.
