ABSTRACT

Selecting scientific models to teach is a difficult task. In the case of evolutionary biology there is a complicated panorama due to the numerous models developed after the synthetic theory of evolution. In this context, it is common for endosymbiosis to be presented as a revolutionary modification contrary to Darwinism. From this point of view, Darwinism would imply a view of nature centred mainly on competition. Endosymbiosis would show, in contrast, the importance of cooperation. In this paper we will question this image, which is common among teachers, and we will show how, in fact, the correct characterisation of endosymbiosis presupposes the Darwinian view of nature, both theories being complementary. Finally, we will draw the didactic consequences of our approach.
