ABSTRACT

The study examines the forest edges (from Suceava county) within the Calimani National Park, as these ecotonal zones represent transitional areas between ecosystems with distinct characteristics and play a crucial role in enhancing both local and landscape-level biodiversity. Consequently, the study aimed to conduct an ecological assessment of these forest margins, to classify and map them, to categorize the edges based on their ecological potential, and to propose strategies for improving their biodiversity. The mapping of the forest edges resulted in a detailed plan indicating the location and ecological potential of each edge fragment. This map enabled the analysis of the potential categories of the entire forest edge system under study, revealing areas with very low, low, medium, and high ecological potential. The study, along with the proposed action strategies for improving edge structure, contributes to the park’s management objectives concerning biodiversity conservation and enhancement.
