A Hough Transformed Based Approach for Fingerprint Orientation Field Estimation

ABSTRACT

Accurate estimation of fingerprint orientation fields is fundamental for fingerprint enhancement, matching, and recognition. Subsequent operations rely on the orientation map. This paper presents a method for reliably estimating fingerprint orientation using the Hough transform. The suggested method reduces the impact of noise and distortions. It achieves accurate orientation maps by combining an understanding of ridge structure with contextual data. We conducted experiments using the publicly available Tsinghua Distorted Fingerprint Database (TDF) and a synthetic fingerprint database created with Anguli software. These experiments evaluated the effectiveness of the suggested technique. Findings indicate that, compared to existing methods, the proposed Hough transform-based approach significantly reduces the impact of noise, such as cuts and smudges. This leads to more accurate and reliable orientation maps. Our research offers a viable approach for dependable fingerprint analysis, with applications in classification, recognition, and matching systems.
