Land-use change due to various anthropogenic activities generates habitat fragmentation. The objective of this study is to understand the dynamics of land-use change, classify the fragmentation index based on the Patton diversity index, and identify the activities that cause it in the El Tokio Priority Terrestrial Region (RTP-80), during the period 1995–2018. For this purpose, the vector data set of land use and vegetation of Series II, IV and VII of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) was used. Ten vegetation and land-use types were grouped in the analysis of land-use change, revealing a percentage loss of natural grassland cover (-30%) and desert scrubland (-9%), while the area under irrigated agricultural activities increased (105%). The degree of landscape fragmentation was determined as well as the diversity in the shape of the fragments of the natural vegetation type, which was classified into a low, medium, and high fragmentation index based on the surface area, obtaining a higher percentage with high fragmentation in 2018: 65.4% for natural grassland and 91.38% for desert scrub. The constant change in land use, due to the increase in agricultural activities in the region is challenging the permanence of its native vegetation.
