ABSTRACT

Abstract THE bursa of Fabricius, during embryonic development and its early post-natal period, functions to confer antibody potential upon the chicken (Glick et al., 1956; Glick and Sadler, 1961; Mueller et al., 1962; Cooper et al., 1966). Removing the bursa after 5 weeks of age did not significantly affect antibody production (Chang et al., 1957). Although the bursa contains protein similar to immunoglobulin (Marinkovich and Baluda, 1966; Glick and Whatley, 1967; Thorbecke et al., 1968), it is not a primary site of antibody formation (Dent and Good, 1965; Glick and Whatley, 1967; Jancovic and Mitrovic, 1967). Thus, immunological function of the bursa might be completed during its most rapid phase of post hatching growth (Glick, 1964). This article presents data which indicates that an intact bursa appears to be essential for the rapid recovery of antibody potential after x-irradiation. A preliminary report has been published (Sato and Gotoh, 1965). MATERIALS AND…
