METHODS. A national prospectively collected ICU data registry was used for analysis (Intensium Ltd., Kuopio, Finland). All adult (age ≥ 18 years) trauma admissions excluding burns and isolated head traumas registered during the period between 1 January 2000 and 31 June 2003 were retrieved for analysis. Data from 22 ICUs were available for analysis (seven ICUs in five university teaching hospitals and 15 departments in secondary referral, non-teaching hospitals). The non university affiliated ICUs were further categorized according to the number of beds in the unit (small, medium, large). APACE II adjusted mortalities were compared between the units.
