ABSTRACT

In their investigation of the birth weight of siblings with phenylketonuria, Rothman and Puesehel (Pediatrics 58:842, 1976) found a difference of 90 gm between affected and unaffected sibs, a finding " compatible with the assumption that the intrauterine growth of children with classical PKU is not adversely affected." In my own investigation,1,2 the discrepancy was 356 gm. This reduced fetal growth in homozygotes with PKU was associated with increased perinatal morbidity and with limited intellectual achievement.
