ABSTRACT

To reverse the effects of long-term fire suppression in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana, a threetiered approach is being initiated: assessment, education and demonstration. A survey to assess the current level of public knowledge has been developed and is being distributed. Educational materials will be developed based on the results of the survey. Finally, a series of workshops will be offered to the public to demonstrate the need, suitability and safety of prescribed burning or mechanical fuel removal to reduce the chance of catastrophic wildfire in the Wildland/Urban Interface.
