The progress of modern high-throughput technologies has a major impact on the life sciences producing large amounts of data. As a consequence modern bioinformatics tools often require highly efficient implementations of core algorithms. The usage of dedicated hardware is thus becoming increasingly attractive in order to overcome performance bottlenecks. This article surveys the usage of massively parallel accelerator technologies in bioinformatics data analysis based on GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs.
