• What did the research find? This study found per capita GDP and general surveillance to be transmission riskreducing. However, there were interregional differences. For the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), intrabloc live poultry imports were riskreducing while extrabloc imports were riskincreasing; for the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) the reverse was true. This is probably because the EU and ASEAN have long-standing biosecurity standards and stringent enforcement, but ECOWAS suffers from a lack of uniform standards and lax enforcement.
