Quantitative assessment of consumption by Abax ater Villers (Coleoptera, Carabidae)

During their seven months' development, larvae ingested 2340 mg (FW) of pre-digested earthworm flesh before their pupal moulting. Young emerging imagoes fed on ground beef meat consumed about 5740 mg (FW) during their first year (seven months) of activity. Older hibernated imagoes consumed 3850-5350 mg during the same time lapse. When fed on earthworms, their consumption was about twice higher. Adult consumption was zero at temperatures below 6°C and reached its maximum value at 15°C. -from Authors
