Introduction Propolis is a rigid substance that becomes brittle when cold and ductile and malleable when warm (Simões, Araújo, & Araújo, 2007). It is produced by bees (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) using substances from various plant parts, such as shoots, flower buds, and resinous exudates, and is enriched with salivary secretions. The coloration and chemical properties of propolis depend on its composition, which varies according to the vegetation of the region, the time of the year, the technique used to collect it, and the species of bees that produce it. The propolis can exhibit shades ranging from dark brown to reddish or greenish brown. The diversity of colors and composition in propolis is the main challenge for its use in phytotherapy (Bankova, De Castro, & Marcucci, 2000; Bera & AlmeidaMuradian, 2007; Simões et al., 2007).
