Indeed, there have already been transplants of islets and corneas in patients in some countries (and some, but not all, of these studies have been reported). The experience gained from these initial trials will be of immense importance in furthering our field of research, and it is therefore essential that data from these trials are recorded and made available to interested researchers. Local research groups will maintain their own data, and some national regulatory authorities will undoubtedly save data from trials carried out within their countries, but these data may not be made public. If possible, for the benefit of the medical and scientific communities (and the public) it will be important to maintain records of trials taking place worldwide. I suggest that the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA) should accept responsibility for collecting and collating these data as they become available. Today, in the USA, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) collects mandatory data from all centers carrying out organ allotransplantation in the country, and there are similar registries in other countries or groups of countries. However, UNOS and similar organizations will not have oversight over clinical trials of
