Opinions about how learner language actually differs from native speaker (NS) language frequently occur in the literature. In all corpora, the ten most frequent words account for about a quarter of the total vocabulary of a text: some a little more, others a little less. In the last three rows, however, a difference is developing between the NS corpus and the learner corpora in that the figures for NSs are consistently lower than for learner groups. Since the vocabulary of non-native speakers (NNSs) is smaller than that of NSs of a comparable educational level, a reasonable hypothesis is that the overused words would be primarily those word forms that occur most frequently in the texts. However, reasonable to suggest that advanced learner language is in some respects more, in others less, vague than NS language.","claims":[{"public_id":"cl_cfcd1182f6a9cc0b6426673c28482da5","status":"active","text":"A corpus of advanced learner English makes it possible to study lexical features of learner language
