A study to determine effects of past recreation on the forest vegetation and soil environment clearly showed surface compaction\n and some sheet erosion. There were essentially no differences in subsoil available moisture between recreation areas and sections with relatively undisturbed forest cover, but surface soil moisture on the areas compacted by recreation was depleted during late summer to a level well below permanent\n wilting point. Although some reduced tree crown vigor and wilting were present, the extremely low surface soil moisture levels were more critical in limiting grass and other ground
