ABSTRACT

Abstract Osteoclasts play a pivotal role in healthy bone remodeling. However, often when cancer cells metastasize to bone the normal function of the osteoclast can be significantly disrupted. The cancer cells can secrete factors into the bone marrow microenvironment to promote osteoclast formation and activation, resulting in increased bone resorption. Cancers such as breast, prostate and multiple myeloma can develop osteolytic bone disease due to increased osteoclastic bone resorption. This can result in destructive and debilitating bone disease, often leading to increased fracture risks in patients.
