ABSTRACT

Abstract The liver and pancreas are fundamental organs of multicellular organisms. The severity and occurrence of diseases due to hepatic and pancreatic malfunction necessitates an understanding of mechanisms of gene regulation and dysregulation. This review describes how transcription factors and dynamics in the epigenetic landscape affect liver and pancreatic cell identity and physiological function during homeostasis and regenerative responses to disease and environmental insults. Understanding the intricate connection of genetics, epigenetics, and environmental cues, in both homeostatic and altered conditions, will provide a roadmap to develop targeted therapeutic strategies to combat liver and pancreas dysfunction.
