Abstract Natural substances such as polysaccharide gums offer a unique advantage in the designing and development of different drug delivery systems. This chapter deals with the application of cashew gum, a polysaccharide extracted from the bark exudates of Anacardium occidentale (family: Anacardiaceae) plant. Cashew gum has been reported to have excellent rheological and biomucoadhesive properties, which can be applied in the designing and development of various useful and cost-effective drug delivery systems. The literature studies have enumerated various applications of cashew gum as pharmaceutical excipients such as a binder in tablets and capsules, matrix-forming agent for sustained release dosages, and coating for delayed release dosage forms.
