Abstract Interactions between skeletal muscle and bone have mostly been studied for their mechanical and physical interdependence. Given the close spatial relationship between bone and muscle, the emerging field of bone-muscle crosstalk has been investigating whether bones and muscles interact not only mechanically but also biochemically. Growing evidence demonstrates that muscle and bone are endocrine organs. They produce and secrete “hormone-like factors” by which each tissue can influence each other as well as other tissues. Bone produces and secretes factors that can modulate myogenesis and muscle function, which we have called “osteokines.” Here we will summarize recent progress in bone to muscle signaling and the use of biomaterials in the regeneration of bone via the ability to release inorganic species that can induce biomineralization.
