ABSTRACT

Hypericum perforatum is native to parts of Europe a nd Asia but has spread worldwide as a cosmopolitan invasive weed, including to temperate regions of India, Chin a, Canada, Africa, and the United States. The aim o f this study was to overview its therapeutic effects. This revie w article was carried out by searching studies in P ubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Iran Medex databases . The initial search strategy identified about 98 ref er nces. In this study, 42 studies was accepted for further scr eening and met all our inclusion criteria [in Engli sh, full text, therapeutic effects of Hypericum perforatum and dat e mainly from the year 1987 to 2016.The search ter ms were “Hypericum perforatum”, lemon balm, “therapeutic pr operties”, “pharmacological effects”. It is commonl y used for antimicrobial effect, neuroprotective effect, a nti-depressive effect, antioxidant effect, menopaus e, dental practice, anti-inflammatory, wound healing effect, anti-cance r effect, anti-herpes effect, phototoxicological ef fect. Hypericum perforatum is widely used for therapeutic and non-t herapeutic purposes that trigger its significant va lue. Various combinations and numerous medicinal properties of i ts extract, oil, and leaves demand further and mo re studies about the other useful and unknown properties of th is multipurpose plant.
